Botox® Cosmetic is an injectable treatment that we offer for the temporary correction of frown line wrinkles. As one of the world’s most popular procedures, Botox is used in more than 70 countries worldwide. With a simple injection, Botox can reduce the appearance of wrinkles for several months.
When to Choose Botox Cosmetic
During your visit to our Birmingham cosmetic surgery office, Dr. Petro may recommend Botox for the treatment of frown lines, also known as “glabellar lines.” Other possible treatment applications include forehead lines, crow’s feet and various therapeutic uses such as muscle spasm and hyperhidrosis.
Botox is FDA approved for cosmetic use in patients 18 to 65 years of age. This product is not recommended for those with an infection at the proposed injection site or those with a known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin or any other ingredients within the Botox formulation.
How does Botox Cosmetic work?
Botox works by blocking the chemical signal that activates small facial muscles, causing them relax and stop contracting for several months. Wrinkles then flatten out and become less visible.
During a Botox treatment (usually 15 minutes or less), cosmetic surgeon Dr. Melanie Petro will identify the areas for wrinkle correction and then administer injections. Topical anesthetic can be used, but it’s typically not needed. For best results, Dr. Petro may recommend that you combine your Botox treatment with an injectable wrinkle filler such as Juvederm or Restylane.

The results of your Botox treatment will be noticeable after 4-8 days. During the hours that follow your treatment, Dr. Petro may advise you to remain upright, avoid alcohol, and avoid exposure to the sun. Inform the doctor if you experience any unexpected symptoms or if any existing symptom becomes more severe.
Possible side effects of Botox include redness, bruising, stinging, nausea, fatigue, flu-like symptoms, headache and drooping eyelid.
