When to Consider Breast Augmentation
Breast enhancement is typically chosen by women who are dissatisfied with their breast size. They feel self-conscious about their appearance or feel that their body lacks a feminine proportion. When performing breast augmentation for these patients, a cosmetic surgeon seeks to enhance your feminine appearance and improve your self-confidence.
There are other cases in which breast augmentation is performed for restorative or corrective reasons. Breast implants can correct a loss of breast volume or help improve breast symmetry.

Your Surgery and Options in Breast Augmentation
The surgery can be completed in 1 – 2 hours, typically under general anesthesia. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Melanie Petro makes surgical incisions on or near the breast, creates a pocket for the implant (in a centered location below the nipple), and places the implant above or below the chest muscle. This process is repeated on the opposite breast. The incisions are then closed with sutures, skin adhesive and tape.
Breast implants are made of a silicone rubber outer shell that is filled with either saline or silicone gel. Each implant type has certain benefits that you should consider. Silicone gel has a very natural consistency, but also higher cost and a limited range of surgical techniques. Saline breast implants are lighter and because they are filled during surgery, allow for the use of minimally invasive techniques. During your consultation, Dr. Petro can assess your goals for breast augmentation and make a recommendation for the right breast implant type.
What Happens After Breast Augmentation?
The recovery period with breast augmentation varies, but patients should expect one or two weeks of downtime. You will likely be advised to walk (ambulate) within 24 hours. A specially designed bra is provided, that must be worn as instructed. Dr. Petro will prescribe a pain medication to help you manage discomfort as you recover. She may also monitor your results during scheduled follow-up appointments.
