Cheek Augmentation Surgery in Birmingham, AL

Cosmetic surgery can enhance the cheek and mid-face area in multiple ways. Facial implants can be used to augment the underlying cheekbone and dermal fillers can restore volume in the tissue. Either of these techniques can increase the projection of your cheeks and help restore a youthful appearance.

Dr. Petro may recommend cheek augmentation as a single procedure or within a series of procedures for facial rejuvenation.

When to Consider Cheek Augmentation

Because of genetics as well as aging, the structure of your cheekbones may be lacking, causing a flat or hollow appearance in your mid-face. Sometimes the tissue volume in the cheeks can decrease, especially after fluctuations in body weight.

These problems are possible indications for cheek augmentation. During a consultation, Dr. Petro can evaluate your facial characteristics to determine if cheek augmentation would be beneficial for you.

Many cheek augmentation procedures will require the placement of special alloplastic facial implants. These implants are usually made with silicone rubber and naturally shaped to enhance your facial bone structure.

The surgery is commonly performed under general anesthesia, but local anesthesia may be appropriate in some cases. After performing an incision in the upper lip or lower eyelid, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Melanie Petro inserts the implant in front of the cheekbone. The implant is secured, which may require screws or sutures.

If the bone structure is adequate, but tissue volume is lacking, Dr. Petro may recommend an injectable filler to restore fullness in the cheeks. A product such as Radiesse, Restylane or Juvederm may be utilized in these cases. After administering a topical numbing cream or nerve block, the doctor injects the filler to a specific depth beneath the skin. Although the results will be temporary, many dermal fillers have been shown to last for one year or longer.

What Happens After Cheek Augmentation

The results you get from cheek augmentation will be immediately visible, but you should expect some swelling and bruising after the procedure. When a facial implant is used, it can take several weeks for the swelling to subside completely.
