Numerous procedures in ear surgery are offered at Petro Cosmetic Surgery, including operations that can:
- Repair a torn earlobe
- Pin back protruding ears
Although the ears are not considered a primary focal point among the patient’s facial features (unlike the nose, chin or brows) an imperfection on one or both ears can be quite noticeable. Fortunately, most cosmetic ear procedures are effective and relatively simple to perform.
Otoplasty (Ear Surgery)
Otoplasty, sometimes called Pinnaplasty or ear pinning surgery, is a common procedure for reshaping of prominent ears. Often performed for children, otoplasty can help prevent harmful teasing from the patient’s peers. If your child’s ears are large or if they significantly protrude, you may want to consider otoplasty. The surgery can be carried out once the ears are fully developed. Adults who are bothered by the position of their ears can also benefit from ear surgery.
During the surgery, anesthesia (local or general) is administered and an incision is made behind each ear. To reposition the ear, the cartilage is folded, reshaped or partly removed. Sutures are then placed to maintain the new position. The operation requires approximately 2 – 3 hours. Typical recovery time is one week.
After years of wearing heavy earrings, many women suffer from stretched or torn earlobes. Earlobe repair is a simple office procedure that can reverse this damage. The contour of your earlobe is restored and new piercings can be done complimentary in our office as soon as two weeks after the procedure. Dr. Petro can repair conditions such as:
- Torn/lacerated earlobe
- Stretched earlobe
- Disfigured earlobe
The most common procedure is carried out to fix a split earlobe. With the patient under local anesthetic, cosmetic surgeon Dr. Melanie Petro stabilizes the ear and then performs an incision that removes the tissue surrounding the split. This creates a clean edge that can be sewn together to create a natural-looking earlobe.
