Face lift surgery is the procedure of choice for patients who want to reduce deep facial wrinkles, sagging jowls and other signs of aging. While there are many advanced techniques offered by cosmetic surgeons today, the best approach is one that meets your personal aesthetic goals.
When to Consider Face Lift Surgery
The signs of aging can appear earlier than you expect. Wrinkles, folds, sagging skin and other undesirable conditions can make you look much older than you feel. For most people, these age-related conditions become visible between 40 – 60 years of age. Fortunately, there are options to improve your appearance throughout the aging process.
When you visit our office, Dr. Petro can determine if face lift surgery is the best treatment option for you. A face lift is best suited for patients with:
- Deep nasolabial folds
- Loose skin on face/neck
- Sagging jowls
The best candidates for a face lift also have realistic expectations about the expected outcome. This procedure may dramatically improve your appearance, but it can’t turn back the clock or stop the aging process. There are also risks to consider before you choose a face lift, which Dr. Petro will discuss with you in depth. If a face lift is ultimately not right for you, we also offer various face lift alternatives that may provide a satisfying outcome.
Your face lift: What to Expect During Surgery

There are several face lift options that you can discuss with Dr. Petro. The surgery can be carried out under general or local anesthesia; it may be an outpatient or inpatient operation; and there may be other facial rejuvenation procedures performed concurrent with your surgery.
A face lift usually requires about 2 to 3 hours. Surgical incisions follow the natural contour of your facial structure, located along your hairline, ears and neck. After separating the fat from the skin and underlying muscles, Dr. Petro trims and tightens tissue as necessary. The skin is then re-draped and fixated with stitches.
What Happens After a face lift?
You should plan for about 2 or 3 weeks of recovery time, when you’ll need to get plenty of rest. When surgery is complete, you will be sent home wrapped in a loose bandage designed to minimize swelling. Some numbness, bruising and puffiness is a normal post-operative side effect. Dr. Petro will provide specific post-op instructions to make your recovery experience as smooth as possible.
