When to Consider Neck Contouring
Many people desire enhanced definition in their jaw and neck area. Unfortunately, due to aging or weight gain, excess tissue can collect around the neck and distort the youthful angles of the lower face. For young patients, the problem is often fat that accumulates below the chin. In patients over 40, excess skin or sagging neck muscles is more often to blame.
Neck Lift Surgery
Neck contouring is often performed during a facelift, but in some cases, it is offered as a single procedure. If your neck carries sagging skin or muscle, the neck lift may be recommended for you. The goals of a neck lift include:
- Create a defined jaw line
- Reduce the appearance of neck bands
- Reduce sagging, crepey neck skin
To achieve these goals, Dr. Petro may choose several techniques in facial cosmetic surgery. She may opt for a technique similar to a face lift and choose to combine it with a procedure called platysmaplasty, in which part of the sagging platysma muscle is removed or tightened. For many patients, liposuction of the neck and chin will also be necessary.
Neck Liposuction
Liposuction is a common method for removing neck fat. This option is best for patients with good skin elasticity, typically those who are relatively young. Through small incisions (or a single incision) below the chin, Dr. Petro vacuums the fat from the neck area using a thin tube. The chin, neck and jaw area can be treated to restore youthful angles that have been hidden by excess fat.
What Happens After Neck Contouring?
Recovery time will vary depending on the procedure. A special elastic chin strap may be provided, which helps to promote skin contraction during recovery. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Melanie Petro will send you home with special post-operative intructions that you should follow closely. Some bruising, swelling and discomfort should be expected. The doctor will prescribe a medication to help you manage pain during the recovery period. It may be helpful to wear high-necked clothing as you heal.
