The tummy tuck procedure is used to target the fat and skin that tends to accumulate around the waistline. Excess fat and skin are removed from the area using a combination of surgical excision and liposuction, resulting in a contoured, firm abdomen. Also known as abdominoplasty, the tummy tuck can boost self-confidence and body-image. The surgery is commonly performed after major weight loss or after pregnancy to tighten loose skin.

The tummy tuck procedure generally takes between 2-5 hours, and is conducted under general anesthesia. Dr. Petro will mark the incision sites, taking care to minimize visible scarring. One common approach is to make an incision just under the abdomen and above the pubic hairline, and a second incision at the bikini line. The excess skin in this area is pulled down and inward, and the abdominal muscles are tightened with sutures. Finally, the skin is re-draped, and the incision closed.
Other approaches to abdominoplasty include the endoscopic abdominoplasty; mini, partial, and lipo-abdominoplasty. Dr. Petro will be sure to discuss your options and recommend the course of action best suited to your needs. She may combine the tummy tuck procedure with liposuction of the upper abdomen, hips and flanks.
What Happens After Tummy Tuck Surgery?
Recovery from a tummy tuck can be difficult, but Dr. Petro will ensure that you have the aftercare instructions you need so that you know exactly what to do when you return home. Immediately after surgery, a gauze dressing and mild compression will be applied to the area. Most patients are asked to remain in the hospital between 12 -18 hours after surgery for monitoring, and require at least one week away from work. Normal activity can be resumed between 2-3 weeks after the operation.
