Concern 03 / In the mirror

lines around my lips

The Mirror Moment

lines around my lips.

02 / The part you might not say out loud

The Fear Is Real

I want the lines softer. I still want my mouth.

Say that exactly. Discuss the lines separately from the amount of lip volume you want. There is no reason to turn a concern about lipstick lines into a promise of bigger lips.

03 / Melanie Petro, MD

The Surgeon’s POV

Keep the smirk.

Sometimes its a little smirk that changes everything. I love a little smirk line, preserving it keeps you looking natural & like yourself.

From my original “Passion Project” notes.

Lines, lip shape and movement are different questions.

Lines that appear while pursing are different from lines visible at rest. Lost volume, changes in the skin and muscle movement can overlap. A treatment that changes one may not solve the others.

The conversation should include what happens when you speak, sip and smile. Tox near the mouth can affect those movements. Filler and resurfacing have their own benefits, limitations and recovery.

05 / Real life, in my own words

Real & Raw

A little goes a long way.

The same lip conversation, with a wine comparison. The goal and the amount are not the same thing.

A few questions.

The things people ask.

Will filler around my mouth look obvious?

No one can promise what other people will notice. We can be specific about the change you want and what would feel like too much. Your expressions belong in that discussion.

Filler, tox or laser for the lines?
Filler, tox and resurfacing address different aspects of volume, movement and skin texture. The assessment determines whether any is appropriate; there is no fixed two-treatment sequence for everyone.
Does lip filler hurt?
Swelling, bruising and tenderness can last days to weeks. Discuss numbing options, your health history and the possible complications before treatment. Severe or unusual pain, skin-color changes or vision changes need urgent assessment.
How long does it last?
Duration varies with the product, treatment area and your response. Swelling can obscure the early appearance. Follow-up is a time to reassess, not automatically add more.
What if I hate it?

Bring the information you have about it. Start with an examination and a discussion of what changed. Read about migration and dissolving before assuming that more filler—or immediate dissolving—is the answer.
