Your lipstick runs in your lines, or your mouth just doesn’t look the same. Instead of pink fluff, you have wrinkled, dehydrated-looking, tired skin.

Most people just want a touch. They just want it to look like it did, or they just don’t know what went wrong or what looks different.

The Fear Is Real

“I’m scared of
having duck lips.”

People are more afraid to do their lips than anything, even facelifts. It’s heartbreaking to see such a feminine part of the face destroyed. It doesn’t have to be that way.

“Please, whatever you do, don’t do that.”

It’s usually not a celebrity. Mostly it’s somebody in their friend group, or somebody their husband saw. I hate that it’s lip filler, because that’s one of my favorite things to do.

“I’ve had bad filler before.”

You’re naturally going to be very afraid. You’re going to be like, I don’t want that. And I don’t blame you, because you don’t know — who do you trust?

The Surgeon’s POV

Fluffing lips is one of
my favorite things to do.

The angles & shapes are always different, creating shadows that light up with the right shape.

The perfect lip is always a custom cocktail: a dash of Botox, a splash of laser — one, maybe two shots of filler.

“Overfilled lips are like a Dixie cup of expired boxed wine.”

The beauty — the art — the light is destroyed.

A note from me

Let’s leave the animals out of it.

Because I love animals more than the internet loves memes. Let’s be clear: ducks are beautiful. Foxes are beautiful. Cats are beautiful. And none of them volunteered to be symbols for poorly placed filler.

I believe in restoration, not ridicule. In structure, not shame. In doing subtle work on humans — without throwing innocent creatures under the bus for a laugh.

If you’re scared of looking unnatural, overdone, or like a caricature of yourself — you’re in the right place. But let’s leave the animals out of it. They’ve done nothing wrong.

The Game Plan

Start with what you miss.

Is it the shape, the softness, the edge your lipstick used to follow? We look at your lips at rest and in motion, the skin around them, and any filler already there. Then we decide what to treat and how much.

The Recovery Reality

Give them time to settle.

You can feel the injections. Swelling, tenderness and bruising can follow, and fresh swelling is not your final shape. Leave room in your calendar before a big event; we’ll explain the aftercare for your treatment.

The Timeline

A little patience, please.

Early fullness includes swelling. Your follow-up is the time to assess the settled shape before deciding whether to do more. Filler is temporary; how long it lasts depends on the product, placement and your response.

The names on
the syringe.

Restylane and Juvéderm are families of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers. Each family includes different gels for different areas. The name is only part of the plan; your shape and the area being treated matter, too.

Which ones are for lips?

U.S. lip indications include Restylane, Restylane-L, Restylane Silk and Restylane Kysse, plus Juvéderm Ultra XC and Juvéderm Volbella XC. The other products below have labeled uses elsewhere on the face or hands.

Restylane or Juvéderm: which is better for my lips?

There isn’t one answer for every mouth. Restylane Kysse and Juvéderm Volbella XC are two lip options, but each family has several products with different uses. Your lip shape, movement, previous filler and the change you want guide the choice. Compare the product families above.

Where is the practice for a lip filler consultation?

Melanie Petro MD’s practice is in Vestavia Hills, Alabama, serving the Birmingham area. At your consultation, we look at your lips, the skin around your mouth and any previous filler before discussing your options. Contact the practice to plan your visit.

Will I get duck lips?

“I like people looking at someone and not knowing quite what they had.” That is the aesthetic we discuss before treatment: your shape, your proportions and the change you want. We look at what is achievable for your mouth before choosing a product or an amount.

Will my lip filler migrate?

Filler can move from where it was placed. A shelf or a change in shape deserves a look; it isn’t something we can diagnose from a label or a selfie alone. We review what was used, where it was placed, when you had it and what has changed before deciding what to do.

How much do I need?

The amount follows the shape we’re trying to restore. Your anatomy and any existing filler matter more than choosing a syringe size from a menu. We make that decision together after looking at your mouth.

Does it hurt? How long is the swelling?

There can be a sting or pressure with the injections. We talk through numbing before we start. Swelling, tenderness and bruising are common and may take days to weeks to settle; your aftercare instructions and follow-up are specific to your treatment.

How long does it last?

Lip filler is temporary. The product, amount, placement and your response all affect how long it lasts. We’ll explain the expected range for the product in your plan; you don’t need to keep adding simply because time has passed.

What if I don’t like my lip filler?

First, we need to know what’s there. Bring the product name and treatment history if you have them. Some hyaluronic acid filler can be dissolved, but that is a treatment with its own risks and may take more than one visit. Adding more is not automatically the answer.

What else should I know before treatment?

Filler is a medical procedure. Along with swelling and bruising, infection, lumps and other reactions can occur. Rarely, filler can block a blood vessel and cause skin damage, vision loss or stroke. Unusual or severe pain, pale or dusky skin, or vision changes need immediate medical attention.
