The Mirror Moment

my turkey neck.

02 / The part you might not say out loud

The Fear Is Real

Tox, a skin treatment, or surgery?

Start with what is changing: muscle bands, skin, fullness or a combination. Ask what the proposed treatment can change, what it will leave behind and how long that change may last.

03 / Melanie Petro, MD

The Surgeon’s POV

“Where did you go?”

When you look in the mirror & see your mothers’ neck something inside of you freaks out. Where did you go? You don’t see yourself- you see your mother.

There is way more to this than meets the eye. It is so far beyond skin deep. The skin is merely the visual part.

From “Louise’s lift,” my original neck essay, May 2020.

One word. More than one change.

Neck bands, skin laxity and fullness under the chin need separate assessment. A skin treatment, neuromodulator, contouring procedure and neck lift do different things. The choice depends on the change that bothers you, anatomy, health and the recovery you can manage.

Treating the neck does not stop aging. A surgical result, a temporary injectable effect and a skincare change should not be presented as equivalents.

05 / Real life, in my own words

Real & Raw

No neck left behind.

For years, necks were forced to survive on facial leftovers.

Serum runoff.
Moisturizer crumbs.
SPF by sheer coincidence.

Critics called her hands huge.
Necks called them hope.

A few questions.

The things people ask.

Tox, Morpheus8 or surgery?
Assess bands, skin and fullness separately. A neuromodulator, a device treatment and surgery change different things; their results and recovery should not be presented as interchangeable.
Does neck tox really work?
It may soften selected muscle activity in suitable candidates. It cannot remove loose skin. Product, dose, approved use and risks must be discussed; thirty units is not a universal prescription.
What is the recovery from a neck lift?
Expect swelling, bruising, incision care and activity restrictions. Your procedure and healing determine the schedule. Discuss time away from work, practical help and follow-up; early return to activities is not the end of healing.
Can I do the neck without the face?
Sometimes. The jawline and neck are assessed together so you can understand what a neck-only procedure would and would not change.

At home, too

I want between-visit skin care to fit your skin, too. Bring your routine; we’ll look at it together. Skin care has a different role from changing facial structure or removing excess skin.
